Loaves and Fishes Coalition/Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver

Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, one of the oldest affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International, is celebrating its 30th year of operations in 2009.  Since its inception it has built 365 homes in the Denver metro area. In 2008 staff and volunteers completed 38 homes which provide decent, affordable shelter to more than 130 adults and children.

Habitat for Humanity provides a “hand up” not a “hand out”.  Families put in up to 500 hours of sweat equity, and have a mortgage on their new home provided throught Habitat for Humanity Metro Denver.  “Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to build decent, affordable homes in which people can live and grow into all that God intends.”

Loaves and Fishes is a coalition of 15 churches affiliated with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver which tries to sponsor the building of one house per year.  It currently costs $85,000 to sponsor a house and provide volunteers.  Columbine United Church was one of the earliest members of this coalition which started a little over 10 years ago.  We currently contribute over $3500 per year through the Mission Committee and other sources.
